Brief History of the Ministry

  • In February 2002, in response to the request of a parishioner, one of the parish Lenten prayer groups (which meet in members' homes on a weekly basis throughout Lent) was designated as a group for gay and lesbian parishioners.

  • Several members of this Lenten prayer group attended the New Ways Ministry National Conference in Louisville, Kentucky in March of 2002. They began their trip with a blessing by the St. Nicholas congregation at the conclusion of that week's 9:00 a.m. Mass.

  • Throughout 2002 and 2003, these parishioners continued to meet for prayer and for conversations about beginning a Gay and Lesbian Ministry at St. Nicholas. With the support of the pastoral staff, the first general meeting (open to all interested parishioners) was held in September of 2003.

  • The St. Nicholas Gay and Lesbian Ministry has met regularly since the fall of 2003 and has grown from the initial six prayer group members to an active membership of more than 30 people. The group has benefitted from strong ties with other parish organizations and the continued support of the pastoral staff.

  • Group activities have been funded through contributions by group members, St. Nicholas parishioners, and through grants awarded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame Fund for Lesbian and Gay Ministry.
